DR.SCHNELL replaces fossil-based raw materials with renewable ones in many of its products—including MILIZID SHINE ECO.
DR.SCHNELL and BASF are bringing about lasting change in the cleaning industry: Starting in June 2025, DR.SCHNELL will replace fossil-based raw materials in several products—such as MILIZID ECO, MILIZID SHINE ECO, EASY QUICK S, and many others—with the help of the so-called “biomass balance method” for the methanesulfonic acid they contain. The result: a forward-looking improvement in the field of sustainable sanitary cleaning.
Out with fossil-based raw materials, in with renewable raw materials: That is the essence of a collaboration between DR.SCHNELL and BASF. Starting in June 2025, we at DR.SCHNELL will be using an even more sustainable version of the acid in numerous bathroom cleaners containing methanesulfonic acid—including MILIZID ECO, MILIZID SHINE ECO, and our new acidic cleaner EASY QUICK S. The reason for our clear initiative: Methanesulfonic acid derived from fossil sources does not align with our understanding of sustainability or the trust that people place in eco-labeled products. That is why Lutropur® MSA EcoBalanced, a methanesulfonic acid manufactured by BASF, was developed using the biomass balance approach and represents a completely new alternative to conventional methanesulfonic acid with a reduced carbon footprint.
A Pioneering Role in the Plumbing Industry
“With this innovative new raw material, we are underscoring our pioneering role in the sanitary sector and once again consciously taking on responsibility,” says Dr. Axel Schlossbauer, Head of the Product Systems Division at DR.SCHNELL. “By using Lutropur® MSA EcoBalanced instead of BASF’s conventional MSA, DR.SCHNELL reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 300 grams per kilogram of raw material per year. What does this mean for our customers? With every bottle of MILIZID ECO, MILIZID SHINE ECO, and EASY QUICK S, they help make the professional cleaning chemicals supply chain significantly more sustainable—while maintaining the same outstanding effectiveness.”
An innovation with many benefits
Methanesulfonic acid is a key ingredient in most eco-certified professional sanitary cleaners due to its combination of effectiveness and biodegradability. In the production of this innovative methanesulfonic acid, the fossil-based raw materials used at the beginning of the production chain are replaced by renewable raw materials derived, for example, from organic waste.
The switch to this mass-balanced raw material in many of our products offers clear benefits for the environment and our customers:
- A key ingredient in professional cleaning is becoming fossil-free
- We rely on fermented raw materials
- Biogas from the EU is being used
- We are shortening delivery routes and making them more sustainable
- The carbon footprint of our bathroom cleaners has been reduced
Getting More Done Through Innovation
Of course, the cleaning power of all our products remains just as high—despite the optimized selection of raw materials—allowing us to successfully switch to new raw materials without compromising performance. This step makes us at DR.SCHNELL immensely proud and underscores our commitment to being—and remaining—one of the most important pioneers in the cleaning industry. We achieve this not only through our own innovations, such as the DR.SCHNELL CO2 Calculator and our numerous award-winning products, but also through creative partnerships that drive a green transformation in institutional cleaning.
