DR.SCHNELL and BASF are bringing lasting change to the cleaning industry: From June 2025, DR.SCHNELL will replace fossil-based raw materials with renewable raw materials in several products, including MILIZID ECO, MILIZID SHINE ECO, EASY QUICK S, and many others, using the "biomass balance method" for the methanesulfonic acid they contain. The result: a pioneering improvement in the field of sustainable sanitary cleaning.
Out with fossil raw materials, in with renewable raw materials: that is the essence of the collaboration between DR.SCHNELL and BASF. From June 2025, we at DR.SCHNELL will be using an even more sustainable variant of the acid in numerous sanitary cleaners containing methanesulfonic acid – including MILIZID ECO, MILIZID SHINE ECO, and our new acidic cleaner EASY QUICK S. The reason for our clear initiative: Methane sulfonic acid from fossil sources is not in line with our understanding of sustainability and the trust that people place in eco-labeled products. That is why Lutropur® MSA EcoBalanced methanesulfonic acid, manufactured by BASF, was developed as part of the biomass balance approach and represents a completely new alternative to conventional methanesulfonic acid with a reduced carbon footprint.
Pioneering role in the sanitary sector
"With this innovative new raw material, we are underlining our pioneering role in the sanitary sector and once again consciously taking on responsibility," says Dr. Axel Schlossbauer, Head of Product Systems at DR.SCHNELL. "By using Lutropur® MSA EcoBalanced instead of BASF's conventional MSA, DR.SCHNELL saves around 300 grams of CO2 emissions per kilogram of raw material per year. What does this mean for our customers? With every bottle of MILIZID ECO, MILIZID SHINE ECO, and EASY QUICK S, they are helping to make the supply chain for professional cleaning chemicals a good deal more sustainable—while maintaining the same outstanding effectiveness."nbsp;
A novelty with many advantages
Due to its combination of effectiveness and biodegradability, methanesulfonic acid is a key ingredient in most ecologically certified professional sanitary cleaners. In the production of innovative methanesulfonic acid, the fossil raw materials used at the beginning of the production chain are replaced by renewable raw materials obtained, for example, from organic waste.
The switch to mass-balanced raw materials in many of our products has clear benefits for the environment and our customers:
A key ingredient in professional cleaning is becoming fossil-free
We rely on fermented raw materials
Biogas from the EU is used
We are shortening delivery routes and making them more sustainable
The carbon footprint of our sanitary cleaners is reduced
Achieving more through innovation
Despite the optimized selection of raw materials, the cleaning power of all our products remains consistently high, enabling us to make a positive change in raw materials without compromising performance. This step makes us at DR.SCHNELL extremely proud and underlines our ambition to be – and remain – one of the most important pioneers in the cleaning industry. We achieve this not only with our own innovations, such as the DR.SCHNELL CO2 calculator and numerous award-winning products, but also through creative collaborations that drive green transformation in institutional cleaning.
